Personal Statement

About Dhokra Crafts A 5,000 years old non–ferrous metal casting using the lost-wax casting technique. This tribal art form belonging to the traditional metal-smiths of West Bengal is also found in Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, & Andhra Pradesh - each with its own variations & style. The iconic 4500 year old bronze “Dancing Girl” excavated at Mohenjodaro, and now in our National Museum, was made using the same lost-wax technique. Metal art piece is first roughly shaped in clay, & the intricate surface designs moulded in threaded fine wax, giving the finished dhokra item its characteristic linear texture. It is then further encased in clay, leaving a gap for the molten metal to be poured in & the melted wax to drain out as the piece is fired in the furnace. Once fired, the clay shell is broken, revealing the metal piece which is then polished & finished. It takes an artisan 4 to 5 days to complete a simple Dhokra item, & 2- 3 weeks to make the more complex sculptural pieces.

Challenges:

Marketing is their biggest challenge for these remotely located arcticians. Local customers increasingly prefer shiny factory-made brass over the textured finish of Dhokra, and it's difficult to reach the more aware urban clientele. Rising prices due to shortage of wood and damage by using coal in furnace have further reduced the demand for this beautiful & intricate, but relatively little known craft, and more & more artisans are leaving the craft their families have practiced for generations. A new impetus & new creative inspiration is urgently needed -Meanwhile come see and buy - before the craft dies, and livelihoods of craftspeople too.
